Westlake Middle School will continue to offer a Honors Program (formerly called Pre-Ap) for with the 2006-2007 school year.
The Honors Program (formerly called Pre-AP) is a program for all students interested in challenging themselves academically. It incorporates the Pre-AP philosophy which is to equip all students with the strategies and tools they need to engage in active, high-level learning, thereby ensuring that each student develops the skills, habits of mind, and concepts needed to succeed in college as well as in various accelerated programs at the high school level including Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Legacy 2000. Students will be challenged through rigorous instruction at a faster pace, with an emphasis on critical and analytical thinking. Pre-AP is a teacher-professional development set of content-specific and wider pedagogical strategies. All of Westlake’s Honors teachers have been trained in these strategies.
Honors courses are offered in the four core academic subject areas (social studies, language arts, math, and science). Schedule permitting, students may enroll in one, two, three, or all four Honors courses.
All students are welcomed and invited to enroll in Honors courses. The only prerequisite is a desire to participate in a challenging and rigorous course as well as the commitment to access the academic support systems available at Westlake Middle School including Advisory time and after school homework help. High standards and expectations will continue to be a priority. Our goal is to cultivate a school climate that supports the academic rigor of advanced learning for ALL students.
