Westlake Physical Education Ends Statement
A Westlake Physical Education Student will be an active participant that builds new skills and fitness, and also understands the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle. They value and pursue learning in the physical, emotional, social, and academic realm.
Students are required everyday to have:
Students are required to change clothes for class. Clothes should be locked up in a locker to prevent problems.
Absences / Illness / Injuries
Students should not be excused from Physical Education class unless they are incapable of participation at any level. In the case of non-participation, a note from a parent/guardian is required. Participation will then need to be made up at a later date, upon recovery. A doctor's note is required for any non-participation of three continuous days or more. The Physical Education teachers will modify exercises and activities for anyone that has limitations due to illness, or injury. Teachers should be made aware of any limitations before the class period starts.
All students must dress for class unless physically unable. Students with injuries and illnesses still must dress out and will have modified activity so as not to aggravate their problem. Students are asked to "do the best you can" depending on your condition, this way students learn to self-regulate rather than not participate at any level.
Absences and/or non-participation days (including days missed because of field trips) will need to be made up. Problems requiring a long term non-participation due to injury and with a Dr.'s note will be dealt with on an individual basis and will require the student to discuss the situation with the teacher and come up with a plan. It is the student's responsibilit to discuss the situation with the teacher. Absences must be made up within one week of return to school.
Make-up work can be done on the way to lunch or after school, it takes less than ten minutes. It is the student's responsibility to make arrangements for make up work. Absences must be made up within one week of return to school or clearance to participate. Students are asked to go through their exercises, do some running, and review what was missed the day they were absent. They do not have to dress out for make-up work. A short constructed response paper is required as part of the make-up work. This is in support of Westlake's S.I.T. Plan
Anticipated absences will be given an activity log to work on during the absence. The student must meet personally with the teacher before the absence and get the assignment and instructions from the teacher. This activity will not be given via email or phone call. If a student will be absent due to a medical condition we can arrange a packet of written work to do.
Physical Education Content Standards
I. Students demonstrate skills and apply concepts to a variety of physical activities.
II. Students participate regularly in physical activity to establish and maintain a health- enhancing lifestyle.
III. Students demonstrate safe, responsible behavior in physical education settings.
IV. Students recognize that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenges, self-expression and social interaction.
Students are graded based on their application of the above listed standards. There are three categories that make up the total grade; responsibility, warm-ups, and participation. Each category accounts for one third of the grade. Grades are posted on the gym bulletin board weekly (bi-weekly for 6th grade). Teachers will email grade reports home each Monday (every other Monday for 6th grade). It is the student's responsibility to check their grade and ask any relevant questions. Before a parent calls please confer with your student as to what they know about their grade and how they can do make-up work. Student's will be required to talk personally to a teacher regarding make-up work. Notes and emails will not be answered unless a student talks to the teacher first.
Class Guidelines
All class guidelines, operations, curriculum plans, unit plans, are available in our Physical Education notebook. Each P.E. teacher as well as the principal has a copy and anyone is free to look at the notebook at any time.
