What is the Fall 2018 PTO Check Drive?

The PTO Check Drive is a fundraiser conducted at the beginning of the school year and allows families to donate on-line or by cash or check.  We have received feedback that families prefer this type of fundraising in lieu of multiple sales fundraisers throughout the year. We do not participate in fundraising involving sales (wrapping paper, chocolate, Butter Braids, etc.).  We organized and executed the Spring Color Fun Run in May 2018. All of the money generated from that fundraiser ($16,000) has been set aside for the school to use to purchase technology.  We will hold a Fun Run again in the spring of 2019, and the money raised at that event will go toward a purchase decided upon by the staff.  

How much should I contribute and where does our money go?

Our goal is to raise $10,000 from the check drive.  The suggested amount is $25 per student but any amount is gladly appreciated.  All contributions are 100% tax deductible and may be eligible for an employer match. Your contributions go toward the PTO operating budget, which for 2018-2019 includes the following and totals $24,925:

  • PTO Managed Community Events

    • Back to School BBQ, Staff Appreciation Week, Parent Teacher Conference Meals, Staff Training Breakfasts, School Dances, 5th Grade Open House, 5 Star Foundation Gala Basket, Box Top Prizes, Field Trip supplementation, Color Fun Run, PTO Meetings, Community Night Events

  • WLMS Managed Events

    • Friday Treats, Awards/Decorations, Staff Birthday Cards/Candy, Pickles and Popcorn Supplies, Treats – positive referrals/meetings, Event picture printing, Student of the Month Breakfast, Coffee with the Principal, Morale Boosters – Sunshine Club, etc., Custodian/Police/Principal/Bus Driver Days, Locker Contest, Staff Boo Bags, Bully Prevention Luncheon, Survival Week, Staff Holiday Party, Pies with the Principals, 8th Grade Journey Patches, Retirement Gifts, Departing Staff Appreciation, Ice Cream Social, Staff BBQ

  • PTO Operating Expenses

    • Supplies, 501c3 filing, Social Fund, Insurance, Spirit Wear, PTO Petty Cash, Bank Charges

What about excess funds?

Once we have reached the amount to cover our operating expenses, all excess funds go into our School Resources Fund.  This fund allows teachers to make special requests (small teacher grants) to utilize funds. These requests are first approved by the principal and then by the PTO board.  Last year, we were able to accommodate all staff requests.

Why should I contribute?

PTO supports Westlake Middle School in a time when state funding is low for public education.  PTO helps foster a positive environment for the students, faculty and staff by allowing them to have opportunities that they may not have at another school.  By contributing to the check drive, you are helping to support this positive environment. As PTO activities directly impact all children, teachers and staff at WLMS, we feel that participation in the check drive should be 100% of all WLMS families.  

How can I contribute?

Print out the form at the top of this page and turn it in at the front desk with a check (made to Westlake Middle School PTO) or cash.  To make the process easier, there is a secure online site to pay via PayPal or a credit card.
