Dr. Rachel Heide - Principal
Committed to ensuring that all students are given high-quality educational opportunities, Rachel works to develop the capacity of the school community in order to enhance the understanding and the implementation of instructional best practices facilitating the improvement of student outcomes. A dedicated educator from Colorado, Rachel was a classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal and currently serves as Principal at Westlake Middle School. After completing her research for her dissertation entitled Culture and the Classroom: Teachers' Perspectives of Ethnic and Racial Culture in the Middle School Classroom, Rachel was asked to present her work at the 2011 CDE Summit on Dropout Prevention and Student Engagement. Rachel also serves as a member of distinguished faculty in the new competency based principal preparation program at Regis University having been asked to co-write and instruct a course on Educational Policy. Rachel was awarded the 2016 Colorado Assistant Principal of the Year by the Colorado Association of School Executives.
Mr. Jon Novotny - Assistant Principal
Ms. LaShauna Quarles - Assistant Principal
Mr. Novotny is entering his 21st year in education, and his 8th as a Westlake Wolverine. Prior to working in administration, he taught science to 7th, 8th and 9th graders for seven years. He was the Dean of Students at Thornton Middle for five years before becoming an Asst. Principal there for two years. He has a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Colorado and a Master’s in Educational Administration from Denver University. He has a son and a daughter at home and his wife was an instructor in the Outdoor Education program. In his free time he enjoys movies, hiking and playing ice hockey. Mr. Novotny loves being a Westlake Wolverine and is looking forward to helping assure Westlake students get the best education possible. Mr. Novotny works directly with the 7th grade students and the 6th grade Wolf and Grizzly cores.
Empowering students to have a positive growth mindset and encouraging them to see their successes is why Ms. Quarles loves education. It is a great pleasure of hers to join the Westlake staff as an assistant principal. She began her teaching journey, in 2005, as an adjunct professor at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. In 2007, she joined Plattsburgh City School District as a middle school science teacher. For the past 3 years, she has taught at a Title 1 urban high school in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. In addition to teaching, her experience includes being a teacher leader, a professional learning community (PLC) lead, a professional development leader and a teacher union representative. Born and raised in Kansas, she attended the University of Kansas and then transferred to the State University of New York at Plattsburgh earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and a Masters of Science in Adolescence Education. In July 2018, she graduated from Queens University School of Executive Leadership earning her administration licensure. She enjoys spending time with her partner, Kristin, in their new home with their silky terrier. In her spare time she enjoys traveling, hiking, sailing and spending time with family. Ms. Quarles is proud to join the Westlake family and looks forward to contributing to our students journey in reaching their full potential.
