Westlake students participate in Global Read Aloud Event

Westlake 6th and 8th grade students have been participating in the Global Read Aloud. 6th grade has been reading Thirst by Varsha Bajaja and 8th grade read Strong as Fire, Fierce as Flame by Supriya Kelkar which is wonderful by itself but pair that with the Global Read Aloud and our Westlake students have been reading these titles with students from all over the world!  We harnessed the power of having 1:1 devices to create digital postcards, Flipgrid videos, shared Padlet discussions and we even participated in Zoom meetings with classes. These Zoom meetings began with each class asking yes or no questions trying to determine where the other class was located. We used our mapping and inference skills to determine next questions. This was followed by questions about the book and a rich discussion about what is happening in each location with water and indigenous people as well as learning more about those who celebrate the same holidays as the characters in our books.  It was magical, amazing and brought home the power of a shared book!  Adams 12 highlighted the program in their Facebook account and the Broomfield Leader heard about it and featured our program in their newspaper!
